| Educational Objectives |
The children create in movement the feeling of the ocean, the
bubbles, waves, and foam. The children brainstorm for ideas of how to represent these. After an idea is
agreed upon, then the groups practice the idea. They will join together to create a combined piece that reflects
the sights and joys of the sea as well as a day spent on the beach.
Associated Standard and CORE Objectives:
- 7500-0503 - Create curved, straight, bent and twisted shapes with the body.
- 7500-0504 - Express through motion such things as textures, senses,
and emotions. (To stimulate exploration, the teacher might use words such
as sad, happy, noisy, quiet, rough, smooth).
- 7510-0504 - Through movement, explore over/under, above/below, near/far,
in front/behind, inside/outside, and around/through.

- Joys of the Sea component:
- 1 - large sheet
- 1 - PVC stand for sheet (will need assembly)

- 3 - blue mesh
- 6 - blue scarves
- 6 - white scarves
- 2 - green scarves
- 6 - blue and white beach balls
- 1 - strobe light
- 3 - green seaweed pom poms
- 1 - large “Hear the Ocean” shell

| Pre-Lesson Setup |
Assemble the stand for the sheet putting the colored pieces together, red with red, blue with blue,
green with green. Then slide the sheet over the top cross piece and spread the sheet evenly across
the width of the stand. |

Position your overhead projector so that it shines directly on the sheet, with room in between
for students to perform their shadow play. |

| Joys of the Sea |
- Setup the overhead projector, aiming it at the sheet hung on the PVC frame.
- From memory or imagination, have the students suggest ideas of things
they would do at the beach. Explore ways of creating the image in movement
by having the students take turns walking
behind the sheet and in front of the projector.
- Explain the simple rules for shadow theater:
- Do not touch the sheet.
- One entrance and exit at a time.
- Allow the children to perform the movements discussed to express their ideas as the music plays.
Change the overlays on the overhead to create the mood of a day on the beach.

- If necessary, take the sheet down and move the overhead to allow
room for the ocean movement piece.
- Divide the students into groups and give them props to use as they
move to the music.
- Give some suggestions, but encourage the children to improvise with
their own ideas.
- The children in the center act as waves moving seaweed. They concentrate
on the movement created as their backs arch and bend under scarves.
- The long waves are moved as two children cooperate to create a large,
shimmering wave in the ocean.
- Have the children with bubble balls match their movement to the music
and the swirling, flowing path of ocean foam, and have them move in
conjunction with the large waves.
- The children creating the movement of the small waves learn to synchronize
their actions with a game of "follow-the-leader" as the
first ones wave, then the next, followed by the next wave, and so
forth around the circle duplicating the rhythm of the sea.
- All actions are combined as the music plays and the strobe light
flickers. This will provide the children a very satisfying, creative
experience.

NOTE: Guidance must be given to create the mood of the ocean. Watching the video will be very
helpful in your preparation for this module. Depending on the maturity level of the children, kindergarten
especially, a pre-activity to acquaint them with the strobe light is suggested. |

- Artist: Communicate ideas, thoughts, and feelings using a wide variety of materials and methods.
These materials might include oils, watercolors, or plaster. They may also create drawings for use in business and

dances are written down. they instruct performers at rehearsals to achieve the desired effect. They will also audition

perform modern dance, which allows more free movement and self-expression. Others also perform modern dance adaptations

shows, movies, music videos, and commercials.

- Musician: Play musical instruments, sing, compose, arrange or conduct groups in instrumental or vocal
performances. They may perform alone or as part of a group; before live audiences or on radio; or in recording studios,
television, or movie productions.

- Oceanographer: Study the physical aspects of oceans such as currents and the interaction of the surface of the
sea with the atmosphere. They also study and map the ocean floor and collect information using remote sensing devices
aboard surface ships or underwater research craft.
